First Steps to Data Visualization Using Excel: Data Sources, Prep, Summary, & Charting (Part 2) Online

In this hand-on workshop, participants will learn the basic steps of cleaning, summarizing, and charting data in Excel.  Using a publicly available secondary data set, we will explore common Excel functions and features (including filter, sort, count, measures of central tendency, etc.) that allow us to efficiently organize and summarize data.  Once the data is prepared for charting, participants will work in small groups to generate data-appropriate charts and apply fundamental design principles to communicate data accurately and convincingly.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify reliable secondary data sources from government and WVU subscription databases

  • Clean and organize raw data in preparation for basic analysis and charting

  • Compute basic summary tables and descriptive statistics in Excel

  • Generate commonly used charts in Excel and apply fundamental design principles
