Layers of Self: Talk by Franny Perez-Ramirez

Layers of Self: Talk by Franny Perez-Ramirez In-Person

West Virginia University Art in the Libraries presents Layers of Self: Talk by Franny Perez-Ramirez. WVU PhD student Franny Perez-Ramirez is the 2025 Art in the Libraries Graduate Student Exhibit Award winner who received the award for her work, “Layers of Self: Visual Narratives of Teaching.”

This exhibition presents a series of collages based on a qualitative research study exploring how graduate teaching assistants’ lived experiences, beliefs, and backgrounds shape their teaching philosophies. Each piece interprets identity maps and narrative statements created by participants, combining digital and hand-crafted visuals with short narrative excerpts. Through imagery, color, and texture, "Layers of Self" highlights themes of culture, belonging, identity negotiation, and pedagogy—revealing teacher identity as dynamic, contextual, and deeply personal.

At the talk, Perez-Ramirez will discuss the process of creating the exhibit, which is on display at the WVU Downtown Library in the Graduate Commons on the lower level.

This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required, but is encouraged for planning purposes.
