Art in the Libraries Graduate Student Exhibit Award Talk In-Person
On International GIS Day 2024, Kushal Naharki, Art in the Libraries' Graduate Student Exhibit Award winner will present a talk on "Aerial Detection and Release of Natural Enemy Insects using Drones to Manage Invasive Species." Invasive species pose a huge threat to agriculture and the forest ecosystem creating economic loss of more than $120 billion annually in the United States. They are usually found in hard-to-access areas where it is difficult for humans to reach, which brings the need for use of cross cutting edge technology like drones for their detection and management. The presentation will explore the innovative use of drones equipped with sensors for the detection and targeted release of natural enemy insects to control invasive species. He will discuss the integration of advanced mapping and remote sensing tools with biological control strategies, highlighting the potential of this approach to enhance precision and effectiveness in managing invasive species threats. The talk aims to shed light on innovative methods being developed at West Virginia University using cutting-edge techniques that combine technology and natural solutions for sustainable environmental management.
