Sharing is Caring, but Precision is Vision: Metadata for Impactful Open Data Online
Publishing data openly facilitates collaboration, reproducibility, and research integrity only when datasets can be found by parameters as specific as scientific topics, researcher affiliations, or even individual variables. Well-crafted metadata not only increases the visibility of research, but parameterizes it for discovery by other researchers, scholars, and funders. This online workshop for WVU graduate student and faculty researchers describes tools and best practices for using metadata to describe openly published datasets in 9 NIH recommended generalist repositories and the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Participants will learn how to code a metadata record in DataCite, how to select a repository for an openly published dataset based on the DataCite metadata elements and schema extensions available, and how these choices may affect discoverability and impact of research. They will develop an understanding of how metadata in data repositories interfaces with identity management and document identification schemas to facilitate precision retrieval required for scientific and academic inquiry.
