Keeping Track of Your Drafts, Edits, and Revisions: An introduction to version control Online

Research is an active, iterative process that consists of editing, re-editing, revising, and otherwise manipulating materials many times over the courses of a project. This can result in in the creation of numerous versions of your files, so how to you keep track of everything? How do you know which draft is the most recent, or which file is your raw data as opposed to your analyzed data? Addressing these challenges is a process known as version control. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to track and manage your files as they change and grow throughout the course of your thesis, dissertation, or other research project.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand that your research files will change over time
  • Learn to use naming and storage conventions to “version” your research files, making it easier to know your research history
  • Gian familiarity with tools that can help you with versioning, particularly when you’re collaborating on documents with others
